Just the week, the automaker announced that they will be making their Rear Door Alert technology standard equipment on all four-door trucks, sedans and SUV nameplates by 2022. This safety feature is designed to remind drivers to check their back seat for children and pets in an effort to reduce potential heatstroke incidents.
Rear Door Alert works by using a series of distinctive honks as the driver walks away from the vehicle. According to their press release, Nissan is the first automaker to use a beeping horn as an alert for this type of feature.
This smart technology was created by two Nissan employees – Elsa Foley, an industrial engineer and mother of two young children, and Marlene Mendoza, a mechanical engineer and mother of three. "The idea was inspired when I accidentally left a pan of lasagna in the back seat of my car overnight," said Mendoza. "The worst thing was the car smelled for days, but it made me ask myself, 'What if I left something far more important back there?'” Amazing how a simple mistake can lead to the creation of a life-saving safety feature.
